Male leopard trapped and rescued in Bahraich after livestock attacks

A male leopard estimated to be five to six years old was successfully rescued from Guleria Jagatpur village under the Motipur Range in Bahraich district late Tuesday night. The big cat was trapped in a cage set up by the forest department at around midnight following repeated sightings and livestock attacks in the area.

The village, which falls under the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division, had been gripped by fear as the leopard had been actively prowling the area and preying on cattle. Responding to mounting concerns from locals, the forest department acted swiftly and installed a trap cage at a strategic location. The leopard walked into the cage during the night and was safely captured without incident.

Following the rescue operation, the animal was transported to a safe house where veterinary officers conducted a preliminary examination. According to the veterinarians, the leopard is healthy and active. Further action will be taken in accordance with directives from senior officials and as per the established National Tiger Conservation Authority protocol.

This marks the seventh leopard rescue in the Katarniaghat division in just 35 days, highlighting the growing frequency of human-wildlife conflict in the region. The forest department has been maintaining constant vigilance to prevent such confrontations and ensure the safety of villagers living near forested areas.

Officials have urged residents in and around forest zones to remain alert and immediately report any wildlife sightings to the nearest forest post or forest officers. The recurring incidents underscore the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and community safety in areas bordering natural habitats.
