Mainpuri: Family Alleges Surgery Negligence, Teen Critical for Weeks

A family in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri has levelled serious allegations of medical negligence against a private hospital, saying their 14-year-old daughter has been fighting for her life for nearly a month and a half after a gallstone operation. The family says it has been forced to sell property to save her, and has demanded action from the district magistrate, the superintendent of police and the chief medical officer. The health department has assured action as per rules after an inquiry.

What the family alleges

The case is from Azad Nagar in Mainpuri. Resident Nawab Singh took his 14-year-old daughter to Sengar Hospital after she complained of stomach pain, and tests reportedly found gallstones. The father alleges the family was assured of a laparoscopic (keyhole) operation, but an open surgery was performed instead.

Condition worsened after operation, father says

The father alleges that negligence by the doctor during the operation damaged the girl's liver, after which her condition kept deteriorating. He says her body has turned yellow, she has no appetite, and pus is continuously discharging from the surgical site. He has also alleged that the operating doctor was under the influence of alcohol. This particular allegation has not been independently verified, and no official response has come from the hospital.

Selling property for treatment

The family says the girl is now being treated at another hospital, for which they are having to sell their immovable property. The father has submitted a written complaint to the district magistrate, the superintendent of police and the chief medical officer, seeking action against the doctor and the hospital. The family alleges that despite complaints, no concrete action has been taken so far.

What the CMO says

Chief Medical Officer R.C. Gupta said the matter is being investigated. Legal action will be taken based on the facts that emerge from the inquiry report, he said. For now the matter is under investigation, and only after it is complete will it be clear whether there was negligence in the treatment. The family, meanwhile, is looking to the administration for action in its demand for justice.
