Ganga river in Kanpur nears flood warning level, authorities on high alert

The Ganga river is swelling in Kanpur, with water levels now just 38 centimeters below the official warning mark, prompting authorities to step up monitoring across vulnerable zones along the riverbank. At the Ganga Barrage, the situation is even more critical, with the upstream level standing a mere five centimeters short of the danger threshold.

Water level readings recorded on Tuesday showed the upstream gauge at the barrage registering 114.100 meters, while the downstream level stood at 113.950 meters. Meanwhile, the Shuklaganj gauge recorded a level of 112.620 meters. These measurements from different points are being closely tracked by irrigation and disaster management departments to assess the river's behavior and potential flood risk.

The rising waters have put district authorities on high alert, particularly for low-lying areas and the Katri region, which are most vulnerable to flooding. Officials say the key challenge now is ensuring timely communication with residents in affected zones if water levels continue to climb. Monitoring of rural roads, power supply, drinking water facilities, and other essential services has been intensified as a precautionary measure.

Residents living along the riverbanks have been urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary proximity to the water.
