Firefighters brought a blaze under control after it threatened to spread from a chocolate and dry fruits shop to neighbouring establishments in Kannur’s densely packed market area.
The fire broke out at Emirates Chocolates and Dry Fruits on Market Road, near Kambasaar Mosque, around 12.45 am on Tuesday.
Blaze contained after nearly two hours
Passersby noticed smoke rising from the first floor of the building and alerted the Fire and Rescue Services.
Three fire engines from Kannur reached the spot and battled the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing it under control.
The fire originated in the first-floor area where chocolates were stored.
The timely intervention of the Fire and Rescue Services prevented the blaze from spreading to neighbouring commercial establishments in the market area.
The flames also spread to the adjacent shop, but firefighters extinguished the fire before it could cause extensive damage to the neighbouring establishment.
The close proximity of several shops in the area had raised the risk of the fire spreading rapidly.

The shop belongs to V.C. Ahmed, a native of Koothuparamba.
A preliminary assessment put the loss at around ₹2 lakh.
