After nearly 100 years, wild buffaloes have returned to the Supkhar area of Madhya Pradesh’s Kanha Tiger Reserve. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav released eight wild buffaloes brought from Assam’s Kaziranga into a specially prepared 17-hectare enclosure.

The return of the wild buffaloes marks an important step towards re-establishing their population in the state. The animals have been brought to Supkhar under a planned conservation initiative aimed at creating a suitable environment for them and supporting their long-term settlement in the area.

Special arrangements have been made in the Supkhar region to provide the wild buffaloes with an environment suited to their needs. The objective is to help them adjust naturally to their new surroundings and live comfortably in the enclosure.

Under the plan, the number of wild buffaloes in Kanha’s Supkhar area is to be increased to 50 over the next three years. Eight buffaloes have been released in the initial phase. Their adaptation, health and behaviour will be monitored before the next steps of the plan are decided.

The monitoring process will help shape the future course of the programme. It will also provide information about how the animals are adjusting to the new environment and how their health and behaviour are developing after their arrival from Kaziranga.

The return of the species to Supkhar after nearly a century is being seen as significant for the conservation of biodiversity. It is also expected to enrich the wildlife diversity of Kanha Tiger Reserve and strengthen efforts to protect natural habitats.

The initiative is not limited to bringing back a single wildlife species. It also seeks to promote the protection of the natural habitat and the ecosystem connected with the wild buffaloes. The plan focuses on establishing the animals again in an environment where they can adapt and continue to live.

If the effort to reintroduce wild buffaloes in Supkhar succeeds, the area could become an important centre for their conservation and development in the coming years. The first phase, involving eight buffaloes in the 17-hectare enclosure, has now begun, with the three-year target of settling 50 buffaloes in the area.
