Dragon Boat Festival Drums Up a Buzz as Unsettled Weather Fails to Dampen Spirits

Thousands of residents and visitors gathered at beaches and waterfronts across Hong Kong on Friday to celebrate the Tuen Ng Festival, with dragon boat races proceeding as planned despite unsettled weather conditions. The event, marked by rhythmic drumming, powerful paddling, and enthusiastic cheers, brought vibrant energy to the city's shores.

The festivities came just a day after Hong Kong experienced two black rainstorm warnings, yet both competitors and spectators remained in high spirits. Popular venues, including Stanley, Aberdeen, Sha Tin’s Shing Mun River, Tai Po, Tai O, and Sai Kung, were packed with crowds eager to soak in the lively atmosphere. In Stanley, the event saw participation from 185 teams and approximately 4,000 athletes, many of whom expressed their excitement and enjoyment of the races.

Naomi Watanabe, a 25-year-old English teacher and member of the Hong Kong Japanese Dragon Boat Club, shared her enthusiasm for the event. “The vibe is really good and we can feel the energy,” she said, adding that she was relieved the races had not been canceled due to Thursday's heavy rain. With improved weather on Friday, her team performed well, further boosting the celebratory mood.
