Hong Kong witnessed a major upset on the second day of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship 2026 as India's Arjun Erigaisi defeated five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a thrilling encounter. Representing the defending Rapid team champions, MGD1, Arjun faced Carlsen on the top board in a high-stakes clash against the star-studded WR Chess team, led by the Norwegian legend.

The pivotal moment came in the sixth round of the Rapid event, where Arjun's victory over Carlsen proved instrumental in securing MGD1's 3.5-2.5 win over WR Chess. The game, a dynamic Queen’s Gambit Declined, saw Carlsen make an uncharacteristic rook blunder after an earlier desperate bishop sacrifice. Arjun capitalized on the position with a precise queen b6 check, maintaining his advantage and eventually forcing Carlsen to resign on the 30th move.

Reflecting on the game, Arjun admitted he initially thought he might have overlooked something when Carlsen launched his aggressive bishop sacrifice on e6. However, he quickly found the correct sequence to respond. "It got really interesting after that. I first thought I missed something, but then I found this direct queen b6 check. I believe I am better, but it’s not that clear," Arjun explained. He highlighted the importance of his rook sacrifice and Carlsen’s mounting difficulties under time pressure with a vulnerable king.

Arjun's win, coupled with Aryan Abhijeet Shah’s victory over Wadim Rosenstein, sealed the crucial team victory for MGD1. The ongoing championship, held from June 17 to 21, features nearly 50 teams, each comprising six players, including at least one female player and one recreational player with a rating below 2000. The Rapid event follows a 12-round Swiss format with a time control of 15 minutes and a 10-second increment per move.

This triumph comes on the heels of another remarkable achievement for Indian chess, as R. Praggnanandhaa defeated Carlsen twice at Norway Chess 2026 just days earlier. Arjun's victory further cements India’s growing prominence on the global chess stage.
