Centre Issues Alert on Drone Attacks, Anti-Drone Systems Deployed

The central government has issued a warning about the possibility of drone attacks on critical locations near India's borders. According to a report by 'The Hindu', the Ministry of Shipping and Waterways' maritime security wing has alerted authorities about the threat to key assets and installations near land and maritime borders. The ministry has emphasized the need for immediate measures, including the deployment of anti-drone systems, to safeguard these locations.

In response, security agencies have begun installing anti-drone systems at strategic sites across the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a special committee under the Border Security Force (BSF) to evaluate and approve the most effective anti-drone systems for India. Trials have already started in Punjab, near the Pakistan border. Additionally, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has created a team comprising officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Airport Authority of India (AAI), and BSF. This team is visiting critical locations to assess security needs. Final decisions on system deployment will be made based on their reports and the ministry's approval.

Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi port, also known as V.O. Chidambaranar Port, became the first in India to install an advanced anti-drone system in February 2026. Developed in collaboration with Central Electronics Limited, this system uses radio frequency and radar technology to detect and neutralize enemy drones. It provides 360-degree surveillance and is part of the government's 'Amrit Kaal Vision 2047' and 'Maritime India Vision 2030' initiatives to strengthen national security.
