The Bharatiya Janata Party organised a citizens’ meeting in Nihari, located in Ghumarwin of Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh, under its ‘लोकतंत्र बचाओ, अराजकता हटाओ’ campaign. The meeting focused on the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, and included an appeal for public support for the process.

BJP state chief spokesperson and Shri Naina Devi legislator Randhir Sharma attended the meeting as the main speaker. Former cabinet minister Rajendra Garg was also present as a special guest.

During the meeting, it was decided that one thousand workers from the Ghumarwin Assembly constituency would participate in the ‘लोकतंत्र बचाओ, अराजकता हटाओ’ foot march to be held in Hamirpur on 4 November.

Randhir Sharma said that the Congress and other opposition parties were opposing SIR and trying to protect infiltrators. He alleged that the opposition was misleading the public over the voter-list revision process.

Sharma said SIR was a constitutional process aimed at cleansing voter lists. He explained that, under the process, the names of deceased persons, names registered at more than one place and the names of people who were no longer eligible to become voters are removed according to the rules.

He said the Election Commission was carrying out the process across the country. According to Sharma, however, the Congress and other opposition parties were opposing it in an attempt to confuse people.

The BJP leader called on party workers to respond to what he described as the Congress’s alleged misinformation with facts. He also asked them to create awareness among the public about SIR and its stated purpose.

Sharma further said that the process of revising voter lists had also been followed during the Congress’s tenure. He maintained that the current exercise should be understood in the context of the rules for maintaining and updating electoral rolls.

BJP district co-in-charge Deshraj, Suresh Thakur, Jorawar Singh, Naveen Sharma and Raksha Kapil were among the other BJP workers present at the citizens’ meeting.
