NDPS accused escapes police custody during court hearing in Banda

In a major security lapse in Banda district, an accused booked under the NDPS Act escaped police custody during a court hearing on Thursday, August 14, 2026. The accused, identified as Sanjay, managed to flee while being escorted from the lock-up to the courtroom.

How the accused escaped

According to information, the accused Sanjay was being taken from the lock-up to the court for his scheduled hearing. On the way, he told the accompanying Head Constable that he needed to use the bathroom. Seizing the opportunity, the accused shoved the Head Constable and fled before anyone could react.

Police launch immediate search operation

As soon as the incident was reported, the police administration swung into action. Multiple teams have been deployed to apprehend the fugitive. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage and using surveillance technology to track the accused's location.

Additional SP Banda confirms action

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Banda, Shri Shivraj, confirmed the incident. He stated that on August 14, 2026, while being escorted from the lock-up to the court for hearing, NDPS accused Sanjay deceived the Head Constable by making an excuse to use the bathroom and pushed him to escape.

The ASP said that multiple teams were immediately deployed upon receiving the information. CCTV and surveillance are being used to trace his location, and efforts are underway to arrest the fugitive. A fresh case has been registered and legal proceedings are being carried out in the matter.

What is the NDPS Act?

The accused was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which deals with drug trafficking and possession offences. Bail under this stringent law is extremely difficult to obtain, which often motivates accused persons to attempt escape from custody.

Police have alerted all nearby stations and expressed confidence that the accused will be apprehended soon.
