A fugitive accused, who had escaped police custody during a court appearance, was arrested following a encounter in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh. The operation, conducted by a joint team from Tindwari police station, Chilla police station, and the Special Operations Group (SOG), took place on August 16, 2026. The accused, identified as Sanjay alias Tannu, was injured in the shootout and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.

Sanjay had been on the run since August 14, 2026, when he managed to evade police custody during a court hearing under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He tricked the officer on duty by asking to use the restroom and escaped. Following his daring getaway, Banda Superintendent of Police (SP) Palash Bansal announced a reward of ₹25,000 for information leading to his capture. Multiple police teams were formed to track him down, utilizing CCTV footage and surveillance technology to pinpoint his location.

Acting on a tip-off, the police team intercepted Sanjay near Sattimai Temple on the Mirgahani Bridge road. When confronted, he opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate in self-defense. During the exchange, Sanjay sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, which allowed the police to apprehend him. Along with his arrest, the police recovered a 315-bore country-made pistol, two empty cartridges, and three live rounds.

Sanjay, who faces charges under the NDPS Act, the Gangster Act, and several other cases, is considered a habitual offender. His arrest is being hailed as a significant success in the district’s ongoing crackdown on crime and criminal activities.
