Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised serious concerns about the Great Nicobar Project, alleging that the Modi government is misrepresenting its purpose. In a 16-minute video shared on social media platform X, Gandhi claimed that the project is not about national security or transshipment, as stated by the government, but rather aims to benefit a businessman by enabling the construction of hotels and casinos on ecologically valuable land.

Gandhi, who has been vocal against the project for over a month, emphasized its impact on the environment, tribal rights, and transparency. He described his visit to the southernmost tip of India, Indira Point, where he explored ancient trees and coral reefs, highlighting the ecological significance of the area. He also urged citizens to sign a petition advocating for environmental preservation over commercial interests.

The government, however, has defended the ₹90,000 crore project as a strategic initiative. It includes plans for an international transshipment port, airport, power plant, and township. Officials argue that the project is crucial for India's maritime security, trade, and Indo-Pacific strategy, given its proximity to the Malacca Strait, a key global trade route. They believe it will reduce dependency on foreign ports like Singapore and Colombo for container transshipment.

The contrasting views on the Great Nicobar Project continue to spark debate, with Gandhi's allegations adding to the controversy surrounding its environmental and economic implications.
