Woman stages indefinite protest over property dispute in Shravasti district

Smt. Samadei, wife of the late Sahajram and a resident of village Hardattnagar Girant in Shravasti district, has been staging an indefinite protest since August 22, 2026, at the dharna site near the office of the Divisional Transport Officer in Bhinga. The protest revolves around two primary demands that have come to light, one of which concerns possession of a house and shop built on plot number 2372 measuring 0.020 hectares in Hardattnagar Girant.

District authorities have repeatedly explained to Smt. Samadei that the matter concerning the property is of a civil nature and currently under judicial consideration as Case No. 84/2026, Sundarlal versus Samadei, pending before the Civil Court. Officials, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jamunaha and Tehsildar Jamunaha, have held multiple rounds of discussions with her, clarifying that any action can only be taken in accordance with court orders and that intervention by the revenue department would not be procedurally appropriate under existing government directives.

On August 29, 2026, District Magistrate Annapurna Garg personally met with Smt. Samadei and reiterated that since her case is sub-judice, proceedings can only follow the court's directives. However, Smt. Samadei remains firm in continuing her protest despite the explanation. Her second demand pertains to the alleged illegal occupation of khaliyan plot number 2306 measuring 0.101 hectares in Hardattnagar Girant by Sundarlal, son of Tulsiram.

Taking immediate cognizance of the second demand, the District Magistrate instructed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jamunaha to ensure possession is restored. On August 30, 2026, the revenue team identified the land and initiated proceedings to remove the temporary illegal occupation carried out by Sundarlal and other villagers. The administration is working to address the grievance while emphasizing that the primary property dispute remains subject to the civil court's jurisdiction.
