Woman files dowry harassment complaint against husband and in-laws in Muzaffarnagar

A married woman from the Budhana area of Muzaffarnagar district has filed a serious complaint against her husband and in-laws, accusing them of dowry harassment, physical assault, and threats. The victim, Asmin, has submitted a petition to the women's police station demanding legal action against the accused under dowry prohibition laws.

Asmin was married to Rizwan, son of Abdul Karim alias Pappu, a resident of Luhsana Road near Sitara Masjid in Budhana, on April 16, 2025, following Muslim customs. According to her complaint, her father spent approximately 13 to 14 lakh rupees on the wedding, beyond his means, and provided gold and silver jewelry along with other household items to the groom's family. Despite this, she alleges that her husband Rizwan, father-in-law Abdul Karim, mother-in-law Nafisa, brother-in-law, and other family members began demanding additional dowry immediately after the marriage, repeatedly asking for five lakh rupees in cash and a Bullet motorcycle.

The complaint states that when these demands were not met, Asmin was subjected to physical violence and mental torture. She further alleged that her sister Seema, who was married to her brother-in-law Shahnoor on the same day, faced similar harassment despite both families giving dowry according to their capacity. The victim claims that while community intervention temporarily calmed the situation, the dowry demands and harassment resumed, with her husband threatening divorce and abandonment.

The matter escalated on August 7, 2026, when her husband attempted to take her out of the house under the pretext that her father Ali Hasan was unwell. Sensing foul play, Asmin resisted and alleged that she was subjected to indecent behavior and threats during the incident. She immediately informed her father and called emergency helplines 1076 and 112. Her father filed a complaint at Budhana police station on August 7, which was referred to the women's police station in Muzaffarnagar. On August 24, 2026, Asmin formally submitted her petition demanding a case be registered and legal action taken.

Police officials have clarified that the allegations are currently based on the victim's complaint and the actual situation will be determined only after a thorough investigation. Authorities typically examine such dowry harassment cases based on available evidence before proceeding with further action.
