A pregnant married woman in Muzaffarnagar has approached the Senior Superintendent of Police, seeking justice and protection from alleged harassment, assault and an attempt to kill her by her husband and members of her in-laws’ family. The woman has alleged that she has been facing trouble over dowry since her marriage.

The matter concerns Aashama, a resident of Sherpur in Muzaffarnagar district. In her application, she has made serious allegations against her husband, Sabir, who is a resident of Bhuma, and other members of her in-laws’ family.

According to the complainant’s application, she married Sabir around seven months ago. She has alleged that within a short time of the marriage, members of her in-laws’ family began taunting her over dowry. She also alleged that she was assaulted.

Aashama has alleged that she was beaten on 6 October and that an attempt was made to strangle her. She further alleged that an attempt was made to attack her with a knife at around 7 pm on the night of 7 October.

According to the woman, a neighbour reached the spot at the time of the alleged knife attack and intervened. The neighbour allegedly snatched the knife, preventing the situation from escalating further.

The complainant has also stated that she is two months pregnant. She has expressed serious concern about the safety of herself and her unborn child in view of the allegations against her husband and in-laws.

Aashama alleged that she went to a police outpost with her complaint, but she has not received the relief she expected so far. She has also accused members of her in-laws’ family of taking away her mobile phone and forcing her to leave the house.

The police administration’s official response in the case is still awaited. The allegations made by the woman can be confirmed only after an investigation. It is also yet to be seen how promptly the police examine her complaint and what action is taken on her request for safety and justice.
