UP Vigilance Seizes 13 Kg Gold from Retired ARTO Lalit Kumar

Uttar Pradesh Vigilance has stumbled onto what officials are describing as a treasure trove during searches at properties linked to Lalit Kumar, a retired assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) who had earlier been posted in Agra. According to the agency, the raids turned up roughly 13 kilograms of gold and 9 kilograms of silver, along with cash and a thick file of property documents. Investigators say the scale of the recovery left the search team stunned.

The action is part of a disproportionate-assets inquiry, in which the Vigilance department is examining whether the wealth was built from Kumar's known and lawful income or, as the agency alleges, from the proceeds of corruption during his years in the transport department. None of these allegations has been proven in court, and Kumar has not yet issued a public response.

What the raids allegedly uncovered

Officials say the searches spanned a house in Lucknow and other locations connected to the retired officer. Beyond the gold and silver, the team reported recovering cash said to have been tucked away inside walls and packets. Local reports quoting agency sources put the cash figure at around Rs 1.62 crore and the value of the jewellery at close to Rs 20 crore, with the overall estate — including bungalows, shops, farmland and residential plots — pegged at an estimated Rs 35 crore.
