Trump vows White House ballroom will surpass Beijing's Great Hall of the People

The White House ballroom currently under construction will surpass Beijing's Great Hall of the People, US President Donald Trump has declared, setting up an architectural comparison between the two powers despite the significant size disparity.

Speaking at a Republican midterm convention in Dallas last week, Trump acknowledged China's iconic venue as "a serious hall" and "a very large hall" before asserting: "but we're going to top it. You know, we're going to top it".

Beijing Landmark Returns to Spotlight

Trump's remarks have thrust the Great Hall of the People back into international attention at a moment when Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing for his US visit later this month.

The Great Hall of the People serves as China's most prestigious venue for legislative and ceremonial events. Trump himself stood inside the central Beijing landmark just months earlier, giving him firsthand experience of the space he now seeks to outdo.

The president's claim comes despite the planned White House ballroom being a fraction of the size of its Beijing counterpart. The comparison highlights the symbolic importance both nations attach to grand public architecture as expressions of state power and prestige.
