TMC Parliamentary Group Leadership Dispute: Mamata Banerjee Appoints Kalyan Banerjee as Chief Whip

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a major internal crisis as party chief Mamata Banerjee appointed Kalyan Banerjee as the Chief Whip of the party in Lok Sabha. In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Mamata urged immediate recognition of this appointment. This move comes in response to a rebellion by 20 of TMC's 28 Lok Sabha MPs, who have decided to support the NDA government and have chosen Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as their Chief Whip instead.

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who left the TMC on May 27 but did not resign as an MP, insisted on Monday that she remains the Chief Whip in Lok Sabha. She highlighted her long-standing association with Mamata Banerjee since 1986 and expressed her commitment to continue her political journey. Meanwhile, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghosh slammed the rebellion, calling it "shameful" and accusing the defectors of succumbing to "moral collapse" after alleged pressure from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

This rebellion has triggered debates over the anti-defection law. Since the rebel MPs make up two-thirds of TMC’s Lok Sabha strength, they may avoid disqualification under the law. If recognized as a separate parliamentary block, the NDA’s numbers in the Lok Sabha could rise from 293 to 313, giving the government a stronger position to pass key bills.

The crisis in TMC's parliamentary wing mirrors a similar split in the party’s Bengal assembly, where 58 MLAs recently broke away under Ritabrata Banerjee’s leadership. These developments mark a significant challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and could have far-reaching implications for the party’s future, both in Bengal and at the national level.
