Serial Thief Who Sold Noida PG-Hostel Loot In Tamil Nadu Arrested

The Sector-126 police of Commissionerate Gautam Budh Nagar have scored a major success by arresting a habitual thief who targeted PGs, hostels, flats and rented rooms across Noida and the NCR, and then sent the stolen goods to his home state, Tamil Nadu, to sell them. Police recovered 6 stolen laptops, 7 mobile phones, one motorcycle, Rs 12,500 in cash and an illegal knife from his possession.

How the case came to light

The case began when a complainant reached Sector-126 police station and reported that an unknown person had exploited an open door to steal two of his laptops, along with one laptop each belonging to his friend and room partner, plus an Aadhaar card and a driving licence. Acting on the complaint, police immediately registered a case under FIR 117/2026, Section 305(1) BNS. A dedicated police team was formed to crack the case and arrest the accused, and it began by examining CCTV footage from cameras in the surrounding area.

How the arrest happened

On July 2, 2026, the Sector-126 police, acting on manual intelligence and a confidential tip-off, arrested the accused, Balan Govindan, from Sector-131, Noida. According to police, Govindan, aged around 36, is originally from the Tiruppattur district of Tamil Nadu and had been living in Noida and the NCR for a long time, repeatedly carrying out thefts.

Multiple cases cracked at once

The recovery from the accused was linked to several separate cases. It included 4 laptops, an Aadhaar card and a driving licence tied to FIR 117/2026; Rs 6,500 in cash from selling goods stolen in FIR 99/2026; a motorcycle (UP16CS5291) linked to FIR 267/2026 of Sector-113 police station; two iPhones and Rs 6,000 in cash tied to FIR 95/2026 of the Expressway police station; and 5 more mobile phones, 2 laptops and an illegal knife connected to other incidents.

The modus operandi

During questioning, police learned that Balan Govindan is a habitual, seasoned thief. He specifically targeted PGs, rented houses, flats and residential complexes where working professionals and students live. Before a theft, he would do recce for several days to identify rooms and homes with weak security or doors left open. Given the chance, he would flee with mobiles, laptops, cash, identity documents and other valuables.

According to police, the accused often used a stolen motorcycle for his crimes and, to hide his identity, frequently relied on app-based bike services such as Rapido and Ola. He sold stolen mobiles and laptops cheaply to passers-by, or parcelled them to his home state, Tamil Nadu, to sell them there. He used the proceeds to cover his personal expenses, and carried an illegal knife to scare people into letting him escape if confronted. Police are verifying which incidents the remaining recovered phones and laptops relate to.

A word of caution

Cases like this are a warning for the students and working professionals who live in the city's many PGs and rented rooms. Police have repeatedly urged residents to keep doors locked, avoid leaving valuables unattended, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
