Schools in Gajapati and Kandhamal Reopen Amid Low Attendance

Berhampur: Schools in the tribal-dominated districts of Gajapati and Kandhamal reopened on Thursday for the 2026-27 academic year after a summer vacation of approximately 50 days. However, attendance on the first day was notably thin.

In contrast, several other districts, including Ganjam, have extended their summer break until June 20 due to the ongoing heatwave. Since June 21 falls on a Sunday, schools in these districts are expected to reopen on Monday.

In Kandhamal, even residential schools managed by the tribal development department saw low attendance. District Welfare Officer (DWO) Rabi Narayan Mishra expressed optimism, stating, "Students are likely to come from next week, when classes pick up."

Ahead of reopening, school authorities undertook extensive cleaning of premises, classrooms, and hostel rooms. Drinking water facilities were secured, and hostel water tankers were cleaned to ensure hygiene. Damaged hostel beds were also replaced during the vacation. "We have taken all safety and cleanliness measures in schools for the new academic year," said Kandhamal District Education Officer (DEO) Rajesh Swain.

Despite these preparations, only a small number of students and hostel residents were present on the first day. Authorities remain hopeful for improved attendance in the coming days.
