Rescued dolphin dies in traffic jam, exposing wildlife rescue protocol gaps

A dolphin rescued from the Rapti river in Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh died after the vehicle transporting it became stuck in a traffic jam on Thursday, raising serious questions about wildlife rescue protocols and emergency response systems.

The dolphin had been successfully rescued by the forest department and was being transported in a pickup truck to be released at a safer location. However, the vehicle carrying the mammal got caught in heavy traffic near Idgah Chowk in Bhinga Nagar area. A video of the pickup stuck in the congestion has since gone viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from wildlife activists and citizens alike.

Despite the initial success of the rescue operation, the delay caused by the traffic jam proved fatal for the aquatic mammal. Dolphins are highly sensitive creatures that require specific environmental conditions to survive, and prolonged exposure outside their natural habitat can be life-threatening. The incident has exposed critical gaps in the execution of wildlife rescue missions, particularly the lack of provisions for emergency corridor clearance when transporting rescued animals.

The forest department has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Officials have ordered a post-mortem examination, with the report expected to shed light on whether the dolphin died due to stress, lack of oxygen, or other factors related to the delayed transport. The Gangetic dolphin is classified as an endangered species under the Wildlife Protection Act and is India's national aquatic animal.

This tragic episode has sparked debate about the need for better coordination between wildlife authorities and local traffic police during rescue operations.
