Punjab Declares State Holiday on July 31 to Honor Udham Singh

The Punjab government has announced a state holiday on Friday, 31 July 2026, to commemorate the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh. All government offices, schools, colleges, and other institutions will remain closed on this day. However, essential services will continue to operate as usual. This holiday is part of the official 2026 public holiday calendar issued by the state government.

Remembering Shaheed Udham Singh’s Legacy

Shaheed Udham Singh, born on 26 December 1899 in Sunam, Punjab, is remembered as one of India’s most courageous freedom fighters. Orphaned at a young age, he grew up in Amritsar’s Central Khalsa Orphanage. The tragic Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 profoundly impacted him, shaping his resolve to seek justice for the victims.

Udham Singh spent nearly two decades planning his act of retribution. On 13 March 1940, during an event at Caxton Hall in London, he assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who he held responsible for the massacre. Singh was arrested immediately after the act, tried in a British court, and sentenced to death. He was executed on 31 July 1940 at Pentonville Prison in London.

A Symbol of Resistance and Sacrifice

Udham Singh’s sacrifice infused new energy into India’s freedom movement. His actions and unwavering commitment to justice earned him a revered place among the nation’s great revolutionaries. In 1974, his remains were brought back to India and given a ceremonial cremation. Today, he is remembered as a symbol of resilience and justice, embodying the spirit of those who fought against colonial oppression.
