PM Modi inaugurates Alluri Sitharama Raju International Airport in Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitharama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on Saturday, marking a transformative step in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure. The Greenfield airport, developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a cost of over ₹5,640 crore, is set to handle six million passengers annually.

Cutting-edge features and sustainable design

The airport boasts state-of-the-art technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), biometric passenger processing, automated baggage handling systems, and intelligent operational monitoring solutions. These advancements aim to enhance passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and resource optimisation.

Incorporating sustainability at its core, the facility features energy-efficient HVAC systems, smart building management, a 5 MW solar power plant, rainwater harvesting, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the terminal meets Green Building Standards.

Architectural tribute to Andhra Pradesh’s heritage

The terminal’s design draws inspiration from the region’s cultural heritage. Its roof profile mirrors the traditional Chuttilu cottages and Araku Valley landscapes, while its flowing form symbolises the movement of a flying fish, blending local architectural elements with modern airport aesthetics.

Economic and regional impact

The ASR International Airport is expected to significantly boost tourism, trade, investment, and employment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh. By enhancing air connectivity for North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, the airport will facilitate faster movement of passengers and cargo, serving as a key driver of economic growth and infrastructure development in the state.

High-profile inauguration

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, and Union Minister for Civil Aviation K. Ram Mohan Naidu, alongside representatives from the GMR Group, the airport’s developer. The GMR team briefed PM Modi on the facility’s technological and operational capabilities.

This milestone positions Andhra Pradesh as a rising hub for aviation, aligning with India’s broader goals of regional connectivity and sustainable infrastructure development.
