Fresh Flood Threat In Bihar As Heavy Rain In Nepal Raises Kosi-Gandak Watch

Continuous rain in the catchment areas of Nepal has again raised concern over a possible flood threat in Bihar. Officials are closely watching the water flow in the Kosi and Gandak river systems.

The Water Resources Department has directed round-the-clock monitoring of sensitive embankments. Officials concerned have been asked to remain on alert and keep a close watch on the water level situation.

According to the department’s estimate, water flow at the Gandak barrage in Valmikinagar may reach about 381,638 cusecs by midnight on 27 September. At the Kosi barrage in Birpur, the flow is estimated to reach about 353,407 cusecs.

In view of these estimates, monitoring has been stepped up in areas linked to the Gandak and Kosi rivers. Officials have been asked to remain alert about the condition of embankments, water pressure and possible erosion.

The administration has said that the districts and field teams concerned have been told to stay prepared according to the developing situation. With rainfall continuing in Nepal, the next 24 hours are being seen as important for the Kosi and Gandak belt.

People in flood-prone areas have also been advised to remain cautious. Residents have been asked to avoid unnecessary movement near river banks and embankments and to follow instructions issued by the administration.

If water flow rises suddenly, low-lying areas may face the risk of water spread. In that situation, the monitoring by the department and district administration is being viewed as an important part of flood-preparedness measures.
