Rapti Flows 70 Cm Above Danger Mark, Shravasti On Flood Alert

The Rapti river is in spate in Shravasti, with its water level now flowing 70 cm above the danger mark, raising an immediate flood alarm across the district amid continuous heavy rain and strong winds.

Shravasti is facing what officials described as a double blow from nature. On one side, heavy rain and gusty winds continue to lash the area. On the other, the swollen Rapti is showing its fierce form after crossing the danger level. The river’s rising water has put the district administration on high alert.

Taking note of the seriousness of the situation, DM Annapurna Garg and SP Rahul Bhati reached ground zero with their teams. Amid the continuing downpour, the officers visited highly sensitive and riverside villages and reviewed the arrangements being made on the ground.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain across the entire district till 28 September. According to the forecast cited in the report, there is no sign of relief for the next two days, that is, till 28 September.

Continuous torrential rain in Nepal’s hilly areas and in Shravasti district has increased fears of flooding. The Rapti river is in full flow and its level has reached 70 cm above the red danger mark. Strong river currents are cutting into the banks, leaving villagers living in the riverside areas deeply worried.

In view of the flood threat, the district administration has shifted fully into action mode. District Magistrate Annapurna Garg and Superintendent of Police Rahul Bhati inspected sensitive areas to assess the situation and check preparedness.

During the inspection at Madhwapur Ghat, officials reviewed the condition of the area and issued strict instructions for immediate and strong arrangements to stop road erosion. The administration has asked all relief and rescue teams to remain on 24-hour alert mode.

People living in low-lying and waterlogged areas are also being appealed to move without delay to safe and higher places. The warning comes as the river continues to flow above the danger mark and heavy rain remains in the forecast for the district.

A byte of DM Annapurna Garg was also recorded as the administration continued its field-level review of the flood situation in Shravasti.
