Mother-in-law arrested for orchestrating domestic worker's contract killing in Mumbai

A 35-year-old woman's death in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area, initially reported as an accidental bathroom fall, has been exposed as a cold-blooded, premeditated murder orchestrated by her own mother-in-law. Police investigations have uncovered a chilling conspiracy involving cash payment for contract killing within a family household.

Sapna Ghanji was killed following a sinister plot hatched by her 65-year-old mother-in-law, Dhanlaxmi Ghanji, who allegedly hired the family's domestic help to carry out the murder. Mumbai Police have arrested five people in connection with the case: Dhanlaxmi Ghanji, domestic worker Mangala Jadhav, Mangala's husband Suresh, and their two children, 21-year-old Shivani and 19-year-old Sajan.

According to police sources, Dhanlaxmi had offered the domestic worker and her family a sum of Rs 3 lakh to execute the killing. The accused initially attempted to pass off Sapna's death as an accident, claiming she had slipped and died in the bathroom. However, investigators grew suspicious of the circumstances and launched a detailed probe that unravelled the murder conspiracy.

The case has sent shockwaves through the Ghatkopar locality, highlighting the dark underbelly of domestic disputes that can turn deadly. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the exact motive behind the mother-in-law's extreme step and to determine the precise sequence of events that led to Sapna's death. The involvement of an entire family, including young adults, in the alleged murder-for-hire plot has particularly disturbed investigators.
