Kanpur Waterlogged After 24-Hour Drizzle, Mayor Orders Pond Encroachment Probe

Continuous drizzle over the past 24 hours has created serious trouble in Kanpur, with waterlogging reported on most of the city’s main roads as well as inner lanes, exposing the claims of the Municipal Corporation.

In several areas, including Kidwai Nagar, Juhi, Barra, Govind Nagar, Kalyanpur and Rawatpur, water has accumulated up to knee level. Many other localities are also facing similar conditions. Large potholes on the roads have been covered by the accumulated rainwater, making movement difficult and risky for pedestrians as well as vehicle drivers.

Residents and commuters are facing heavy inconvenience because the water has spread across roads and streets, leaving the situation in the city miserable after the steady rain.

Amid the waterlogging, Mayor Pramila Pandey has given a major statement on the issue. She said the main reason for waterlogging in the city is illegal encroachment on ponds.

Mayor Pramila Pandey has also ordered an investigation. She said that “the city’s 312 ponds will be investigated.” Ponds found to be under illegal encroachment will be identified and freed from occupation so that rainwater can get a proper route for drainage.
