Kanpur police arrest two suspects in gang rape of 14-year-old after shootout

Police in Kanpur Dehat have arrested two suspects in a gang rape case involving a 14-year-old minor after an encounter in which one of the accused sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. The arrests followed swift action by Gajner police station officers in response to a complaint filed by the victim's mother.

The case was registered at Gajner police station on 9 September under sections 70(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with sections 5G/6 of the POCSO Act, recorded as case number 0222/2026. The complaint was lodged by the mother of the minor survivor, leading to immediate police mobilization to track down the perpetrators.

Acting on information provided by an informer on the morning of 10 September 2026, a police team moved in to surround the suspects. As officers attempted to close in, the accused opened fire on the police team with a country-made pistol with intent to kill. The police were forced to retaliate in self-defense during the confrontation.

In the exchange of fire, one of the accused, Anil Singh, sustained a bullet wound to his right leg. He was immediately sent to the Community Health Centre in Gajner for medical treatment. His accomplice, Kalka Prasad, was overpowered and captured at the scene itself.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Anil Singh, son of Rajdulare, and Kalka Prasad, son of Ingu. Both men are residents of village Kathethi under Gajner police station jurisdiction in Kanpur Dehat district.

During the operation, police recovered one illegal country-made pistol of 315 bore, one empty cartridge and two live cartridges of 315 bore, and cash amounting to ₹660 from the possession of the accused.

Under interrogation, both suspects confessed that after learning about the registration of the case against them, they were planning to flee from the village. Police have now registered a fresh case against the two accused for the life-threatening attack on the police team as well as under the Arms Act, and further legal proceedings have been initiated.
