Ishan Kishan's explosive performance against Afghanistan has sparked a selection dilemma for the Indian cricket team, but it’s not KL Rahul who should be worried. Walking in at No. 4 after failures from both Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kishan delivered a match-winning innings that also served as a strong statement to the selectors.

For nearly four years, KL Rahul has been India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs, solidifying his place in the middle order. Despite occasional debates about his role in Tests and exclusion from T20 plans, Rahul has consistently performed in the fifty-over format, even adapting to the finisher role at No. 6 on Gautam Gambhir's recommendation. None of the other contenders, including Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel, or Jitesh Sharma, have managed to challenge his position.

However, Ishan Kishan presents a different kind of competition. His ability to adapt and deliver under pressure was evident in Lucknow, where he showcased his capacity to pace an innings. Kishan reached his fifty in 52 deliveries before accelerating to a stunning 125 off 79 balls. His technical adjustments, such as altering his stance against Rashid Khan to exploit the off-side, demonstrated a level of control and maturity that goes beyond form.

Kishan’s performance has raised questions about India’s top-order configuration ahead of the England series. With Virat Kohli assured at No. 3 and Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and Rahul following, the focus shifts to the opening slots. Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal are under scrutiny, especially after their failures in the Afghanistan match. If Rohit does not deliver in the final ODI in Chennai, the selectors could face a tough decision.

Kishan’s versatility makes him a valuable asset. He offers a left-handed option in a predominantly right-handed top order, serves as a back-up wicketkeeper, and can float within the top four. Importantly, his inclusion does not necessitate dropping Rahul, whose spot appears secure for now.

India’s management is keen to finalize their three openers well in advance of the next World Cup, giving them ample game time over the next year. Kishan, who forced his way into the T20 World Cup squad earlier this year, has now made an early and emphatic case for a permanent spot in the ODI setup.
