Indian Box Office Reaches Rs 6,398 Crore in First Half of 2026

Indian cinemas have posted a staggering Rs 6,398 crore in box office collections during the first half of 2026, marking the strongest January-to-June period since the pandemic. A robust release calendar and rising footfalls have fueled the surge, with Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge leading the charge as the year’s biggest blockbuster so far.

Dhurandhar Powers Record Growth

The action-packed Dhurandhar: The Revenge has been a game-changer, contributing nearly 20% of the total domestic box office revenue. The film earned Rs 1,813 crore globally, cementing its dominance in 2026. Alongside Dhurandhar, other major hits like Peddi, Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, Bhooth Bangla, and Welcome To The Jungle collectively brought in nearly Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, showcasing the strength of high-profile event films across languages.

June alone added Rs 1,038 crore to the box office, with Ram Charan’s Peddi emerging as the month’s top earner at Rs 288 crore. In total, 13 Indian films crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in the first half of the year, with six of them entering the Rs 200-crore club.

Hindi Cinema Leads, Telugu Follows

Hindi films dominated the market, accounting for 44% of total box office revenue, driven largely by Dhurandhar. Telugu cinema followed with a 20% share, while Tamil films contributed 12%. Malayalam and Marathi films also made notable gains, alongside Hollywood releases, which added to the diverse mix.

Rise in Theatre Admissions

The first half of 2026 also saw a significant rise in cinema footfalls, with 37.8 crore admissions recorded—a 5% increase from 36.2 crore during the same period in 2025. This marks a crucial recovery for theatres, which had struggled to regain pre-pandemic attendance levels. However, the record for first-half footfalls remains with 2022, when blockbusters like KGF: Chapter 2 and RRR drove unprecedented crowds.

Can 2026 Break Post-Pandemic Records?

With major releases like Ramayana: Part 1, King, Toxic, Fauzi, Jailer 2, and Hollywood tentpoles such as Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day still to come, trade analysts are optimistic about 2026 setting new benchmarks. Experts believe the year could surpass the post-pandemic annual footfall record of 94.3 crore, achieved in 2023, and potentially cross the 100-crore admissions mark for the first time.

If the momentum sustains, 2026 may not only deliver the highest annual box office collections in recent history but also reaffirm the enduring appeal of the big screen in India’s entertainment landscape.
