Gonda police arrest man for theft of jewellery and documents from woman's home

Gonda district police have cracked a theft case reported earlier this week and arrested one person in connection with the incident. The accused, identified as Mannu Vishwakarma, approximately 30 years old, son of Jhurre, a resident of Seerpurwa village under Belwa Nohar jurisdiction in Kotwali Dehat police station area, was apprehended on August 28, 2026, at 11:40 am. The arrest follows a complaint filed under case number 816/2026 under sections 331(4) and 305(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The theft occurred on the intervening night of August 26 and 27, 2026, at the residence of Smt. Rampatty, wife of Ramdatt Yadav, in Belwa Nohar village. An unidentified thief had broken into her home and stolen silver jewellery items stored in an old box, along with her Aadhaar card and passbook. Following the complaint, the Kotwali Dehat police registered a case and launched an investigation.

During the probe, the police team conducted detailed intelligence gathering and examined available evidence, which led them to Vishwakarma. Upon his arrest and subsequent search, officers recovered several stolen items including three pairs of white metal anklets, one pair of white metal ornamental chains, one pair of white metal earrings, one pair of white metal toe rings, the victim's Aadhaar card, passbook, one mobile phone, two combs, a blue saree with matching petticoat and blouse, and a brown-white jewellery purse.

The police have prepared a seizure memo and arrest memo as per legal procedure. During investigation, the charges under section 305 BNS were modified to 305(1) BNS, and further investigation is now being conducted under sections 305(1), 331(4), and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The successful operation was carried out by a police team led by Sub-Inspector Vijay Shankar, along with Head Constables Karan Yadav and Shaukat Ali, and Reserve Constable Durgesh Patel. Further legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
