Ghaziabad police seize 20 kilograms of cannabis in major smuggling bust

Ghaziabad police have arrested two men and seized over 20 kilograms of cannabis in a major anti-smuggling operation. The SWAT team of Trans Hindon Zone and Sahibabad police station jointly apprehended Gaurav Pal and Amit Kumar on August 20, 2026, near the Hindan river bank close to Balaji Vihar in the Sahibabad area. A total of 20 kilograms and 600 grams of illegal cannabis was recovered from their possession.

According to the press note issued by Sahibabad police station, the teams were conducting routine checks of suspicious persons and vehicles as part of crime prevention measures when they received a tip-off from an informer about the cannabis smuggling operation. Acting on the intelligence, officers moved swiftly to intercept the accused. A case has been registered against both men under sections 8 and 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and further legal proceedings are underway.

During interrogation, the arrested men revealed they procured the cannabis from an unidentified person near Bhubaneswar railway station in Odisha. They claimed they were not previously acquainted with this supplier, who frequently operates around the railway station area and provides cannabis at lower rates. The duo would then transport the contraband to the National Capital Region and sell it at inflated prices to earn profits. They admitted using the money earned from drug sales to fund their lifestyle and household expenses and were on their way to sell the cannabis when police intercepted them.

Amit Kumar has a significant criminal history, with four registered cases against him. These include one case under the NDPS Act at Sahibabad police station, another NDPS case at Sadar Bhubaneswar station in Odisha, a third NDPS case at Sector-14 Gurugram in Haryana, and one case under the POCSO Act at Kalyanpuri police station in Delhi. No criminal history was found for Gaurav Pal. The Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate has reiterated its commitment to continuing strict action against illegal narcotics trafficking and distribution.
