Ghaghra river floods submerge villages across Bahraich district, displacing hundreds

Flooding has wreaked havoc in Bahraich district as the Ghaghra river has once again taken a menacing form, submerging more than one and a half dozen villages and hamlets across two tehsils of the district. Floodwater has entered homes in several villages, completely disrupting the everyday lives of the residents. The sudden intrusion of water into houses has brought the domestic lives of people to the brink of ruin.

Villagers from multiple settlements including Jangal Gulriha, Sampatpurwa, Khairi Purwa and several other villages in Motipur tehsil are appealing to the administration for help. Meanwhile, four hamlets, Janki Nagar and Mahant Purwa, of Poore Prasad Singh village in Mahsi tehsil have also been affected by the floods. The situation is such that on one hand water has flooded homes, while on the other the Ghaghra river is rapidly eroding farmland. In a matter of moments, the fertile land of farmers is being swallowed by the river, and lines of worry are clearly visible on their foreheads.

In the flood-affected areas, schools have been closed and the administration has arranged alternative facilities at safe locations for the education of students. However, the continuously accumulated water in homes and the threat of dangerous aquatic creatures from the river remain a major challenge for children and villagers alike.

On the orders of the government, the district administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. The tehsil administration is providing lunch packets to the affected families. Teams from the health department are reaching village after village to monitor flood victims.

Motipur SDM Monalisa Jauhari said that the second wave of floods is causing difficulty for the villagers, but the administration is fully alert. Essential facilities including vaccination of livestock, education for children, and food arrangements are being provided.

The affected rural population is grappling with the twin disasters of inundation and land erosion, with the Ghaghra river continuing its destructive course through the fertile agricultural belt. Administrative arrangements remain on alert mode to address the unfolding humanitarian crisis in both Motipur and Mahsi tehsils.
