Former Ujjain transport inspector sentenced to four years for disproportionate wealth

A special court in Ujjain has convicted a former transport inspector for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, sentencing him to four years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of 60 lakh rupees. The convicted official, Sevaram Khandegar, who served as Transport Inspector in Ujjain district, was found guilty under sections 13(1E) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sent to Bherugadh Jail following the judgment delivered on August 31, 2026.

The case dates back to November 11, 2011, when crime number 122/2011 was registered at the Lokayukta Special Police Establishment in Ujjain. Deputy Superintendent of Police O.P. Sagoriya, leading a Lokayukta team, conducted a raid at Khandegar's residence at 11/3 Alkananda Nagar in Ujjain on the same day. The raid uncovered substantial quantities of cash, jewelry, and luxury items at the official's home, triggering a detailed investigation into his financial affairs.

The probe, later conducted by Deputy Superintendent S.S. Udawat, revealed alarming discrepancies in Khandegar's financial records. The investigation established that while his total legitimate income during the check period amounted to Rs 27,37,628, his expenditure reached Rs 1,84,15,129, an excess of 572 percent. Based on these findings, a chargesheet was filed in the special court on August 30, 2014.

After a thorough trial, the Special Judge for Prevention of Corruption Act cases in Ujjain found Khandegar guilty of corruption. The court additionally ruled that failure to pay the 60 lakh rupee fine would result in an extra year of rigorous imprisonment. Special Public Prosecutor Manoj Pathak, later assisted by D.D.P. advocate Sanjay Meena, conducted the prosecution with support from constable Sanjeev Kumariya.
