Mizoram is grappling with a significant drug crisis, as synthetic drugs from Myanmar continue to flow into the state through its 500 km open border. The Champhai district, located near the Myanmar border, has emerged as a major corridor for drug trafficking. In the past three years, approximately 4000 kg of drugs have been seized in the region.
The Young Mizo Association (YMA), a local volunteer group, has been actively working to combat the spread of synthetic drugs like 'Ice' and 'Candy.' YMA volunteers patrol sensitive areas, aiming to protect the younger generation from the growing menace. The organization collaborates with police and narcotics officials under 'Operation Jericho,' launched in September 2025, to conduct raids and rescue victims.
Digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook are reportedly being used by traffickers to operate secret networks. Drugs are often sold using code words, and transactions are facilitated through chat group screenshots. In Aizawl alone, 239 drug addiction cases were recorded between April 10 and May 28 this year, highlighting the alarming scale of the crisis.
Mizoram's Excise and Narcotics Department Joint Commissioner Peter Johmingthanga confirmed the use of code words in local drug networks. Meanwhile, YMA's Central Committee General Secretary Prof. Malsawmlianna revealed that traffickers have shifted routes to Manipur due to increased vigilance in Champhai. Drugs now enter India through Manipur before being distributed to other regions and even exported to Bangladesh and Arab countries.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently conducted its first raid on the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram, targeting drug trafficking-related money laundering. Searches were carried out in Champhai, Aizawl, Assam's Karimganj district, and Gujarat's Ahmedabad.
