Community toilet caretakers in Shravasti protest for better pay and timely dues

Community toilet caretakers in Shravasti district staged a protest near the collectorate on Monday, demanding better working conditions and timely payment of honorariums. Dozens of caretakers from across the district gathered at the dharna site under the banner of the Community Toilet Caretaker Employees Association, raising their voices against the current system.

The protesters have put forward a five-point charter of demands that includes an increase in their monthly honorarium and regular, timely payment of dues. The caretakers, who maintain public sanitation facilities across the district, have launched what they call a "system improvement campaign" to draw the state government's attention to their long-pending grievances.

Shani Kumar, president of the Caretaker Association, addressed the gathering and made it clear that the protesters expect swift action. "We demand that the state government fulfill our demands at the earliest," Kumar said, warning that the movement would be intensified if their concerns continue to be ignored.

The caretakers, many of whom have been working for years maintaining community toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission and other sanitation schemes, say they are struggling with irregular payments and inadequate compensation for their work. They expressed frustration over the lack of response from officials despite repeated representations.

The protesters have vowed to escalate their agitation if the administration does not address their demands soon. Community toilet caretakers play a crucial role in maintaining public hygiene infrastructure, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas, and their protest highlights the often-overlooked challenges faced by sanitation workers. The district administration has yet to issue a formal response to the demonstration.
