Bulldozers demolish nine homes on government pond land in Shravasti district

Bulldozers rolled into action early morning in Shravasti district, razing nine families' homes to the ground within moments. The administration carried out the demolition drive to remove encroachments from government land identified as pond area in the Ikauna Dehat police station jurisdiction.

According to the local administration, nine families had constructed houses on the identified pond land, and these structures were demolished in compliance with a High Court order. Officials have revealed that the demolition action had been proceeding in a phased manner over the past approximately five days.

The faces and anguish of the families caught in the bulldozer action have now come to light. The affected families claim they have been living at this location for a long time, and their fathers and grandfathers also resided at the same spot before them.

One woman stated that she had received benefits under the Chief Minister Housing Scheme in the year 2022, but now that very house has been flattened in the bulldozer action. The families allege that the entire settlement was destroyed after being told conflicting measurements, sometimes 26 meters and sometimes 36 meters of land.

On the other hand, the administration maintains that the land belongs to a government pond and asserts that it is being cleared of encroachments under High Court orders.

Following this action, the larger question that looms is that while removing encroachments from government land is the administration's duty, what will happen to the rehabilitation and future of the families whose homes have been destroyed?

For now, the action continues, and the affected families are registering their objections. The situation remains tense as displaced residents grapple with uncertainty while authorities press ahead with the court-mandated eviction drive.
