Tarun Chugh seeks Amit Shah's intervention over Punjab law and order

BJP national headquarters in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah raising serious concerns about the law and order situation in Punjab and seeking immediate intervention from the Centre in the border state.

In his letter dated 8 September 2026, Chugh questioned the law and order and internal security situation in the state, citing the alleged political acceptability of individuals with criminal backgrounds and recent criminal incidents under the Aam Aadmi Party government.

Chugh referred to a function held on 6 September in Jira, Firozpur district, and claimed that Gurpreet Singh Sekhon was inducted into the Aam Aadmi Party in the presence of the Chief Minister. According to the letter, Sekhon was convicted in March 2023 in the 2016 Nabha high-security jailbreak case and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. His appeal is stated to be pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Chugh questioned why someone who was earlier described as a threat to state security was being welcomed into the ruling party.

The BJP leader claimed that more than 21 attacks have taken place in Punjab over the past two years, including rocket launcher and grenade attacks on police stations and other locations. He also mentioned the suicide of Raghandeep Singh Randhawa, district manager of FCI in Amritsar, on 21 March 2026. Chugh alleged that the name of minister Gagandeep Singh Bhullar had surfaced in a case of alleged exploitation and mental harassment related to a tender.

The letter also mentioned a political demonstration held outside Chugh's residence in Amritsar on 1 September. According to Chugh, an alleged criminal named Kamal Bori was seen in videos and photographs of the event. He has demanded that the Director General of Police of Punjab verify his identity, preserve visual evidence and conduct a fair, time-bound investigation.

Chugh claimed in the letter that FIRs have been registered against Kamal Bori in cases related to murder, threats, running a gang, possession of illegal weapons and drug trafficking. He also questioned his alleged proximity to police officials and photographs linked to political events.

The BJP leader said Punjab is a sensitive state adjoining the international border where cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons and organised crime are already serious challenges. In such circumstances, he said, it is necessary to investigate the political acceptability of people with criminal backgrounds and their alleged links with police and politics.

Chugh referred to earlier attacks on the state BJP office and the residence of senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia in Jalandhar while demanding immediate action from the Home Minister on the law and order and internal security situation in Punjab.
