Women wrestlers in Hamirpur uphold centuries-old saree wrestling tradition

In a remarkable display of tradition and strength, women in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh continue to uphold a centuries-old wrestling custom that originated during British colonial rule. The annual wrestling bout, held exclusively for and by women, takes place in Lodipur Niwada village in the Muskara development block area every year after Raksha Bandhan. What sets this event apart is that the wrestlers compete wearing traditional sarees and veils, with men strictly barred from even approaching the arena.

The unique tradition dates back to the British era when men from the village would flee to save their lives from colonial atrocities. Left to fend for themselves in adverse circumstances, women learned wrestling techniques for self-defense and to confront the British oppressors. That legacy has endured through the generations and remains vibrant today. During the wrestling matches, male villagers either stay indoors or leave the village entirely, ensuring the event remains an all-women affair.

The wrestling arena witnesses enthusiastic participation from village women and young brides who don traditional attire and veils before stepping into the ring. Elderly women provide spirited encouragement by beating drums and clapping, energizing the wrestlers as they demonstrate their skills and techniques. This year, referees Abhilasha Gupta and Pooja Gupta oversaw the matches, ensuring fair play throughout the competition.

The event concluded with organizers awarding prizes to the winning wrestlers who successfully pinned their opponents using traditional wrestling moves. A large number of village women attended as spectators, making the event a significant community gathering. The continued observance of this tradition showcases not only the physical prowess of rural women but also serves as a living reminder of their historical resilience and courage in the face of colonial oppression.
