Woman dies by suicide in Pratapgarh after alleged in-law harassment

A married woman died by suicide in Bhati Kala village under Aaspur Devsara police station limits in Pratapgarh district on Wednesday afternoon after hanging herself from a tree. The incident triggered an uproar among family members, with the woman's relatives alleging she was being harassed at her marital home.

Tabassum, wife of Jahid, hanged herself from a Chilbil tree near her house at her parental home in Bhati Kala village. Her two sisters, Sonam and Poonam, spotted her hanging from the tree around 11:40 am on Wednesday afternoon and raised an alarm. Family members immediately brought her down and informed the police.

Tabassum's natal family members alleged that she was subjected to harassment at her in-laws' home in Kutiya Rain village. Her brother had brought her from her marital home to her parental home just about three days before the incident.

The deceased leaves behind three young children. Her eldest son is five years old, the second child is three years old, and the third is around one-and-a-half years old.

Station House Officer Rakesh Chaursiya confirmed that the woman's natal family has alleged that Tabassum took her own life due to harassment by her in-laws. The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and investigation findings, the officer stated.
