Woman crushed to death as dilapidated wall collapses during monsoon rains in Pratapgarh

A 50-year-old woman was crushed to death when a dilapidated wall collapsed on her during monsoon rains in Pratapgarh district on Wednesday morning. Meeta Devi was returning home from her fields around 7:30 am when the crumbling structure gave way in the Gaurabad Newada village under Antu police station limits, burying her under the debris.

Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help and pulled the injured woman from the rubble. She was immediately taken to the district hospital where doctors attempted to treat her severe injuries, but she succumbed during treatment. The tragedy unfolded just 50 meters from her home as she was walking back after checking on her agricultural land in the early morning hours.

Meeta Devi's husband Satya Ram works as a daily wage laborer in the city. The couple has four children, two sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter are already married, while the family had been preparing for their younger daughter's wedding scheduled for November. The sudden loss has plunged the household into mourning and thrown the planned celebration into uncertainty.

Antu police station in-charge Abhishek Sirohi confirmed that authorities reached the spot after being informed of the incident. The body was taken into custody and a panchnama was conducted at the scene. Following a post-mortem examination completed around 5 pm on Wednesday, the body was handed over to the family members. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the wall collapse, which highlights the recurring dangers posed by old, unmaintained structures during the monsoon season when heavy rains weaken already fragile buildings across rural India.
