A newly constructed road in Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district has turned into a death trap, exposing alarming levels of negligence and corruption. Built just six months ago by the Public Works Department (PWD), the road near the PIG warehouse in Gilola block has deteriorated so badly that massive potholes now dominate the stretch. The crumbling road is forcing locals and commuters to risk their lives daily, with authorities and contractors showing no urgency to address the issue.

The road connects Kotwa Rajapur to nearby areas, including Billarwa, and sees heavy traffic, including schoolchildren who cross the hazardous stretch to reach two schools located nearby. Residents say the road barely lasted two months after its construction before large sections began to collapse, leaving behind deep potholes and uneven surfaces. “It’s terrifying to walk or drive here. We’ve raised complaints multiple times, but no action has been taken,” a local resident said.

Thousands of commuters use this road every day, and the danger of accidents looms large. Parents are particularly worried about their children, who have no choice but to navigate the treacherous route for their daily commute to school. The situation has sparked outrage among locals, who blame shoddy construction work and alleged corruption for the road’s rapid deterioration. Despite repeated complaints, neither the PWD nor local officials have initiated repairs or taken steps to improve safety.

The condition of the road has raised serious concerns about accountability in infrastructure projects. With lives at stake, residents are demanding immediate action to fix the road and ensure stricter oversight of future construction projects. For now, the road remains a glaring example of neglect, leaving the community to fend for itself in the face of danger.
