Uttar Pradesh launches free bus scheme for elderly women in Amethi district

The Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrishakti Yatra Scheme was officially launched in Amethi district on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward empowering elderly women with free public transport. State Minister for Health, Medical Services and Education Mayankeshwar Sharan inaugurated the programme by lighting a ceremonial lamp and flagged off special buses to commence the free bus travel service for women aged 60 years and above.

The initiative aims to provide mobility and independence to senior women citizens across the district. At the launch event, specially designated buses were flagged off to begin operations under the scheme, ensuring that elderly women can travel without financial burden. The launch ceremony saw enthusiastic participation from a large number of anganwadi workers and women from across the district, highlighting the widespread anticipation for the service.

In view of the upcoming Rakshabandhan festival, the state minister also announced a special extension of the free bus travel facility to all women, regardless of age. This temporary expansion will be available from 6 am on August 27 until midnight on August 29, allowing women across the state to travel freely during the festive period. The announcement was met with appreciation from the gathered crowd.

During the event, Minister Mayankeshwar Sharan distributed sarees and sweets to the women present, extending his best wishes for Rakshabandhan. The launch ceremony was attended by several senior district officials, including the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, and Chief Development Officer, underscoring the administrative priority given to the scheme.

The Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrishakti Yatra Scheme is expected to benefit thousands of elderly women in the district, providing them with improved access to healthcare, social events, and family visits without transportation costs. The initiative reflects the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable sections of society, particularly senior women citizens.
