Two brothers from Aligarh, who left home on bicycles for their grandparents’ house in Jaunpur, around 700 kilometres away, fearing a scolding from their parents, were rescued by the Sikandra Rao police in Hathras. The children had told their family that they were going for tuition, but instead set out towards Jaunpur.
The two brothers were spotted cycling alone on a highway by a truck driver. Suspecting that something was wrong because of their young age and the fact that they were travelling alone, the driver immediately informed the Sikandra Rao Kotwali police.
Acting on the information, the police found both children near the flyover close to the Sardala bridge on Kasganj Road. The brothers were taken safely into police protection and brought to the police station.
The children were identified as 13-year-old Abhinav Mishra, a Class six student, and 7-year-old Akshat Mishra, who studies in Class three. Both are residents of the Quarsi police station area in Aligarh and are the sons of engineer Abhishek Mishra and Khushboo Mishra.
Abhinav studies in Class six at Saints Jones School, while his younger brother Akshat is a Class three student. The two had left their home after becoming afraid that they would be scolded by their father.
According to the information available, after returning home from school on Saturday, the children were scolded by their mother over some money kept in the house that could not be found. The issue also involved talk of buying a car with that money. The brothers were worried that their father would also scold them when he returned home in the evening.
Because of this fear, the children decided to leave home and go to Jaunpur, where their grandparents live. At around three in the afternoon, they told their family that they were going to tuition and left the house. However, instead of going to tuition, they took their bicycles and began travelling towards Jaunpur.
The children had no idea how long and difficult the journey ahead of them could become. They continued cycling until a truck driver noticed them on the highway. Their presence on the road, their young age and the fact that they were alone raised the driver’s suspicion.
The truck driver then contacted the Sikandra Rao Kotwali police and informed them about the two children. The police quickly reached the area and took both brothers into their safe custody near the flyover by the Sardala bridge on Kasganj Road.
At the police station, the children were given tea and snacks. The police also spoke to them patiently and tried to reassure them. After establishing their identity and details, the police informed the family that both brothers had been found safely.
Their family had been worried since the children left home. When the parents received information from the police that the brothers were safe, they heaved a sigh of relief.
At around half past nine at night, their father, Abhishek Mishra, reached the Sikandra Rao Kotwali. The police then handed both children over to him. Abhishek Mishra took the brothers back with him to Aligarh.
The alertness of the truck driver and the prompt action by the Sikandra Rao police ensured that the two children reached their family safely. The incident also highlighted the danger of two young children travelling alone on a highway by bicycle over such a long distance.
The episode is also a reminder for parents that while it is important to teach children discipline, it is equally important to understand their emotions and the fears they may be carrying in their minds. Speaking to children with affection and patience can help prevent such situations, according to the lesson from the incident.
