Toyota, WOTR Launch 6,167-Hectare Watershed Project in Maharashtra

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) and Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch “Toyota Vasundhara”, a watershed-management and water-conservation programme in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

The project will cover nine villages in Paithan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar talukas. According to the organisations, it will span 6,167 hectares and is expected to reach 11,268 people from 2,398 households. The partners plan to expand irrigation access to 20% of the project area.

Why the project is being launched in Marathwada

The project focuses on a part of Marathwada where irregular rainfall and limited water access affect farming. The press release says the Paithan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar blocks receive average rainfall of about 610 mm, compared with a stated requirement of 748 mm.

It also cites survey findings that 78% of farmers in the target region face unreliable water access, while 93% experience significant seasonal income shocks. These figures were supplied by the project partners and were not independently audited by NewsDarpan.

Water shortages can leave farmers dependent on a single crop and make household income more vulnerable to a weak monsoon. The planned intervention therefore combines water conservation with soil improvement, farming support and livelihood measures instead of treating water storage as a stand-alone activity.

What Toyota Vasundhara plans to do

The programme is expected to include soil and water conservation, development of local water resources, community-development work and need-based livelihood support. The partners say these measures are intended to increase water availability for farms and homes, improve soil health and enable more farmers to adopt multiple cropping patterns.

Local residents will be involved in planning, implementation and the long-term management of water-conservation structures. That community role is important because watershed assets require maintenance after construction and must respond to local land, rainfall and farming conditions.

District administration backs the initiative

The MoU ceremony was held in the presence of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Collector and District Magistrate Vinay Gowda G.C., along with representatives of TKM and WOTR.

Gowda said watershed management was essential for agricultural sustainability and rural prosperity. He said the initiative could support Maharashtra's Jalyukta Shivar campaign and help farming communities build water security and climate resilience.

Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said the programme was designed to address the connected challenges of water, agriculture and rural livelihoods. TKM said it had previously worked with WOTR on water-conservation programmes in North Karnataka.

What happens next

The MoU sets out the partnership and broad targets; the release does not provide a village-wise construction schedule, project budget or completion date. The practical impact will depend on the structures built, local participation, maintenance and whether irrigation and farm-income goals are achieved over time.
