In Sambhal, social worker Deepa Varshney of Hayatnagar is working to make women and children stronger and more self-reliant. Through awareness programmes and competitions, she is encouraging women and girls to understand their rights, responsibilities and ability to face difficult situations.
According to a report by Rajat Malhotra, Varshney believes that women are not weaker than anyone and should learn to deal with their circumstances. With this belief, she has been continuously organising competitions and other programmes for women and girls.
Varshney also believes that helping others brings a sense of peace. Following this idea, she formed a committee named Mahila Shakti Sangathan two years ago. She brought together 24 women from the town and took up the responsibility of serving society through the organisation.
The beginning was not easy. Varshney faced several problems because no major organisation was initially ready to support her work in social service. However, she did not give up. Her committee is now regularly organising programmes to make women aware of their rights and their responsibilities towards society.
The committee also plays an active role in helping with the marriages of girls from poor families. Whenever a poor girl faces a problem related to her marriage, Deepa Varshney and the women associated with her committee reach the family and provide all possible assistance. The committee has so far contributed to the marriages of many poor girls.
Deepa Varshney is also the district convenor of Vishva Hindu Parishad Matrushakti. She has been honoured several times for her commendable work in society.
Along with women’s empowerment, Varshney runs a Bal Sanskar Kendra for children. Children are brought together for one hour every day, where they are taught good habits, values and Indian culture.
At the centre, children are taught prayers, mantras and bhajans. They are also told good stories and taught yoga, cleanliness and discipline. The programme aims to keep children away from mobile phones and guide them towards good conduct.
Varshney says she will continue serving society in the same way throughout her life. Her family is also providing full support for this work. Through her committee and the Bal Sanskar Kendra, she is continuing her efforts to empower women, support poor families and help children develop good habits and values.
