Journalists in Sambhal came together to raise their voice on issues related to the safety, dignity, rights and social security of members of the profession. At a review meeting of the Patrakar Suraksha Seva Samiti, a large number of journalists participated and pledged to strengthen the organisation and intensify the fight for journalists’ interests.

The meeting discussed incidents involving journalists, harassment, security concerns, respect, pension and several other demands. The participants said that these issues needed to be taken up prominently before the authorities.

National president Vinod Verma said that journalists are the sentinels of democracy. He said journalists carry out the responsibility of bringing social problems to the public and taking the voice of ordinary people to the government and administration. In such a situation, there should be no compromise at any level on the safety and dignity of journalists.

Verma said the organisation would strongly fight for the interests of journalists under the leadership of the national president. He said that if any journalist faced an incident, harassment or injustice, the organisation would become the journalist’s voice and stand firmly with them.

“The organisation will stand firmly with a journalist colleague if an incident takes place with them, and we will raise our voice on issues ranging from security to pension,” Vinod Verma said.

He said that journalists were facing not only the question of security but also concerns related to economic and social security. According to him, the organisation would prominently place before the government and administration the demand for a pension arrangement for journalists, prompt action in incidents involving journalists, a guarantee of security, respectful treatment and other demands connected with journalists’ interests.

State secretary Shailendra Kumar said that the unity of journalists was their greatest strength. He said that the problem of one journalist would be treated as the problem of the entire organisation, and efforts would be made to get it resolved.

State media in-charge Pratap Tiwari called upon journalists to strengthen the organisation from village to village and at the tehsil level. He emphasised the need to expand the organisation so that issues concerning journalists could be raised more effectively.

Women’s wing state secretary Sarvesh Yadav said that issues related to the safety and dignity of journalists, especially women journalists, would be raised strongly. She said the concerns of women journalists also needed to remain an important part of the organisation’s work.

During the meeting, journalists said that while collecting news, they often faced pressure, threats and different kinds of difficulties. They said that in such cases, the organisation should become active immediately and stand with the journalist concerned.

The speakers said that any attempt to suppress the power of the pen would not be accepted at any cost. The meeting also discussed prompt action on incidents of harassment, protection of journalists’ dignity, the demand for pension, social and economic security for journalists, and organisational support in any crisis.

At the end of the meeting, all the journalists pledged to remain united, raise the voice of journalists’ interests and stand firmly with fellow journalists in their happiness and sorrow.
