Rapti River water level drops below danger mark despite Nepal flood concerns

Shravasti district authorities reported a drop in the Rapti River water level on Monday afternoon, even as concerns mount over cloudbursts and flash floods in Nepal. The water level at Rapti Barrage was recorded at 127.25 metres at 2 pm, now below the danger mark, according to official readings.

District administration officials stated that despite the flooding situation across the border in Nepal, there is no immediate likelihood of a significant surge in the Rapti's water level at present. The assessment comes amid heightened vigilance along rivers originating in the Himalayan nation, which have been swelling due to intense rainfall and sudden weather events in recent days.

The District Disaster Management Authority has been closely monitoring the river's water level round the clock to track any sudden changes. Officials have been maintaining constant watch on upstream developments, particularly given the unpredictable nature of flash floods that can cause rapid changes in water volume and flow rates within hours.

Authorities have assured residents living in low-lying areas along the Rapti that the administration is fully prepared to issue immediate alerts should any adverse situation arise. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and communication channels with upstream monitoring stations remain active to ensure early warning in case water levels begin rising again.

The development brings some relief to villages and towns along the river's course in Shravasti, which have faced repeated flood threats during the monsoon season.
