President Droupadi Murmu today addressed the first convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bilaspur, in Himachal Pradesh. During the ceremony, she awarded degrees to the institution’s first graduating batch, marking an important milestone in the development of AIIMS Bilaspur and its contribution to medical education and healthcare in the country.

Addressing the graduating students, President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the graduates and gold medal winners. She also appreciated their parents, guardians and teachers who guided them throughout their academic course.

The President said that as the first batch to graduate from AIIMS Bilaspur, the students have a special role in shaping the identity and legacy of the institution. She urged them to uphold the reputation of AIIMS Bilaspur through their conduct, commitment and service.

She reminded the graduates that the medical profession carries an obligation towards humanity. The President encouraged them to give priority to people’s needs in their work, especially those living in remote and difficult areas who have limited access to specialised health services.

Referring to the geographical location of AIIMS Bilaspur, President Murmu urged the institution and its graduates to work towards strengthening tertiary healthcare services in the region. She said this could be done through several channels, including telemedicine, specialist consultations, training for medical personnel and the use of modern technology.

The President also highlighted the role of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in reducing the financial burden of healthcare on economically weaker families. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive health insurance cover of 5 lakh rupees per family per year.

She said that more than 2 lakh crore rupees had already been spent on treatment under the scheme. The President urged stakeholders to ensure that information about these health security measures also reaches people living in remote areas.

President Murmu stressed the need for leading institutions such as AIIMS to contribute to the development of basic and affordable healthcare solutions. She said such institutions have an important role in making healthcare more accessible to people who have limited access to specialised services.

The President also encouraged the graduates to continue learning throughout their lives. She asked them to keep pace with the changes taking place in medical practices and healthcare services.

She further urged the students to transform research into innovations that improve people’s lives. In her address, she underlined that medical education and healthcare must combine scientific knowledge, technology, compassion and trust.

“The field of medicine is not only a field of science and technology. It is truly also a field of compassion and trust,” she said.
