Pratapgarh lawyers demand UGC law review and SC-ST Act amendments

Lawyers in Patti tehsil of Pratapgarh district staged a protest and submitted a memorandum addressed to the President through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), demanding reconsideration of the UGC law and necessary amendments to the SC-ST Act.

The memorandum was handed over to the SDM during a programme held at around 11:30 am. Led by advocate Nandan Chaturvedi and advocate Ambarish Tiwari, the lawyers raised their demand for a fresh look at the UGC law. They argued that necessary changes should be made in the SC-ST Act to prevent its alleged misuse.

The memorandum also called for a review of the reservation system. The lawyers demanded that a high-level committee be constituted to examine the reservation framework and that the committee's report be made public. They emphasised that comprehensive deliberations should be held on issues related to laws and the reservation system, followed by necessary reforms.

The protest and submission of the memorandum reflected the lawyers' concerns about what they described as the need for legislative corrections. The advocates stated that both the UGC law and provisions of the SC-ST Act require careful reconsideration in light of their practical implementation and alleged misuse. The demand for a high-level committee underscored their call for an institutional mechanism to address these concerns through detailed examination and transparent recommendations.
